Gabriel Rodrigues

is a first-year animation student from the University of Greenwich who is passionate about mostly 2D animation and designing stylized characters with an interesting appeal to them. Gabriel mainly specializes in character design which leads him to draw his own characters based on other artworks and media that inspire him. During his time at the university, Gabriel has also gained new skills from 3D animation and sculpting, which he aims to develop further. However, he is still intrigued by the style of 2D since he is more familiar with the software when its hand drawn and can be used for a more stylized approach.

In his earlier project, Gabriel created his first 2D animation by combining two new techniques in clip studio paint and adobe after effects which gave him good results in the end. At an early stage in his life he became inspired by the art style of anime and action cartoons in particular, which made him curious to learn more about animation and how it is made. Using these various techniques he’s learnt along the way, Gabriel aims to make an impact in the animation industry by telling new stories through his own animation style and create compelling characters that can draw out a bigger audience.

Freedom vs Corruption – The battle between two opposite sides.

My artwork is about the representation of freedom by showing how my character fights back against the corruption in this simulated world that traps him in which he tries to escape it. The creation of my character started out from another animation project that I did based on one of the Greek myths, Perseus and Medusa which I retold as a horror/sci fi story showing Perseus as this edgy rebel fighter set in a future Greece. Perseus’ design was inspired by the futuristic and monochromatic style from The Matrix and old sci fi anime like Akira and Trigun which is mostly set in a dystopian future as well.

In this new version my character is still a freedom fighter who goes by a different name, Zenos, as he tries to break free from this virtual world that he believes this greedy corporation behind it has trapped him inside for their own personal gains. I wanted to reuse this character for a bigger purpose than I did before to show how someone as powerless like him is willing to overthrow the system that’s controlling him so that he can free everyone by showing them the truth. This is meant to symbolize how a corrupt government can trap us from the truth but can cause a rebellion to fight against it, which can also be an act of freedom.
